Beginning January 1, 2006, American Dental Association (ADA) community dental clinics can apply for funding to serve low-income Washington residents in areas where dental providers are in short supply.
The 2005 Legislature passed Substitute House Bill (SHB) 1689, creating a Dental Residency Program to increase access to dental services for people at or below 200% of federal income guidelines. The Health Care Authority's (HCA) Community Health Services (CHS) program received $395,000 for the 2005-2007 biennium to increase the number of dentists working in Dental Professional Shortage Areas (DPSA) by supporting dental residents in fulfilling their licensing requirements.
The HCA and the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) are working together to provide these opportunities for dental residents.
If you are an ADA-accredited community dental clinic or pursuing ADA accreditation, please consider the following:
- How will you work with a dental school to target dental residents, and identify eligible patients?
- How will dental services be delivered in a DPSA?
If you are interested in future Dental Residency Program opportunities, contact CHS.
